What's New, What's Hot

Parsley juice, anyone?

By: LMP Editorial Team - February 5th, 2008

February  is often the month in which the gastronomic excesses of the previous weeks really begin to show, a sad fact that motivates the over-indulged to focus on healthier eating. So in many homes right now, vitamin-packed fruit smoothies, hearty soups and low-fat veggie dips are making frequent appearances on the menu.  Fortunately, wholesome foods are a breeze to make with a good countertop blender, and there are several new ones on the market, just in time for your mid-winter health kick.  (more…)

Is the air in your home safe?

By: LMP Editorial Team - February 5th, 2008

It’s tempting to see your home as a sanctuary, safe from threats that lurk beyond the doorstep. And for the most part, it is. But if you think that you and your family are protected from the risk of air pollutants when you’re inside, you may have to think again. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, indoor air can sometimes be more hazardous to health than outdoor air. (more…)

Coffee - the new wine

By: LMP Editorial Team - January 11th, 2008

2528080.jpgMatthew Lee isn’t surprised that Torontonians recently lined up to pay $220 for a pound of Esmerelda coffee beans, a coveted bean variety from Panama that’s often described as having “notes’ of jasmine and bergamot. It’s reflective, he says, of coffee’s elevated status as “the new wine.” (more…)

The coolest thing we saw this week - 11/12/07

By: LMP Editorial Team - November 20th, 2007

Convenient or what? Glad SimplyCooking Microwave steam bags let you cook vegetables, glad-product-1.jpgpasta, fish, meat, eggs and poultry in minutes. No water is added – the food cooks by steam, which keeps its flavour and colour fresh. These bags stand up on their own base in the microwave (no spills!), and have a tear-off top. A package of ten sells for between $3.49 and $3.99 at major supermarkets. For more information, go to www.cookwithglad.ca.

asparagus.jpgThe downside is that they are not recyclable or reusable for steaming. But I’ve been washing them out, and using them for storing prepped vegetables and shredded cheese in the fridge. I personally won’t be using them to cook eggs – too rubbery – but I love the Shrimp Pad Thai Soup recipe that Chef Dennis DeRooy created for Glad. So much so that I’ve included it below.

Ingredients

¾ cup coconut milk
1/3 cup chicken stock
1/2 cup rice noodles (pre-softened in warm water)
1 oz fresh ginger, julienned
2 oz red pepper, julienned
10 oz FROZEN uncooked shrimp
1 oz fresh basil, chopped
Juice of one lime

Directions

Slice the ginger and red pepper
Place the ginger, red pepper, shrimp, rice noodles, coconut milk and chicken stock in a Glad steaming bag
Cook for three to four minutes at full power
While the soup is cooking, place the basil and line in a large soup bowl
When cooked, place the Shrimp Pad Thai Soup in the bowl
Salt and pepper to taste
Makes one to two servings

Remember that to-do list you made in January? The one that’s turning yellow on the fridge door? Well, time is running out to get to those tasks before the calendar changes for the last time this year. If you need some motivation, imagine yourself making a spanking new list of chores for 2008 on a pristine piece of paper.  If that doesn’t work, try treating yourself to a cool new tool as an incentive. Here are a few that might help you get to the bottom of your chore list. (more…)

Great Dane Design

By: Beverly Allen - June 15th, 2007

Great design wears well. That may explain why works by egg chairDanish designers of the last century are still winning prestigious awards and why design junkies are seeking out Danish home décor and design products with an enthusiasm not seen since the 1950s, when Danish modern (remember teak?) was all the rage. Do your homework before making big changes

houseFor the winter-weary homeowner, spring’s vivid palette can be an inspiration to bring new colour to both the interior and exterior of the house. But visualizing how a particular shade of paint or renovation and building materials is too often a gamble that the homeowner loses. (more…)

Let the light in

By: Beverly Allen - February 15th, 2007

felt lampIn ancient times, when the dark winter season began, people believed that the sun would return only if entreated to do so by humans making merry and creating light with fires and candles. While we now understand the science of seasonal change, we haven’t lost the instinct to huddle round the fire and illuminate our homes when the nights are long. (more…)

The kitchen that really cooks

By: Beverly Allen - February 6th, 2007

historicstoveweb.jpgDouble-income families, fast foods, and increasingly hectic lifestyles; all have threatened the kitchen’s central role in the home. But you can’t, it appears, keep the family out of the kitchen for long, especially one that includes a convection oven, built-in wok, fridge with ice maker and wine-cellar, appliances that are becoming more common kitchen features.
