The less stressed move

By: Estelle Gee - April 16th, 2007

homebuykit.jpgThe Great Canadian Ritual…a springtime move! But if a stress-free move sounds like an impossible dream, think again. With a bit of planning and some experienced help this major life transition can run smoothly.
Here’s a five-step guide to an ulcer-free move.
Step 1 Plan ahead. Movers determine their costs by weight so why move stuff you don’t need, use or want? Be ruthless in purging your home of unwanted items.
Step 2 Choose a reputable mover. Ask friends and family for referrals. The moving industry is no longer regulated so take your time and remember that you do get what you pay for.
Step 3 Create a moving kit. This will include an inventory of all the items you plan to move with you, those that the movers will handle and the replacement values of your most precious possessions. Also visit www.canadapost.ca for their SmartMoves checklist. It’s an excellent tool for helping you keep track of what to do.
Step 4 Check your home insurance policy regarding moving related breakage. If you’re not an experienced packer let the movers pack your breakables. They are liable for any damage sustained during the move.
Step 5 When in doubt, delegate. Hire a professional organizing company to handle the details of your move so you don’t have to. Many professional organizers offers these moving-related services:

Pre-Move Preparation
• Sorting and organizing your household contents.
• Arranging for disposal or redistribution of unwanted furniture, clothing, books, and collectibles. They will recommend consignment shops to guarantee the best prices for your items. If you prefer to donate your possessions, they’ll bring your discards to a reputable charity.

Put-Away Service
Professional organizers will also unpack, organize and put away the contents of all your moving boxes. They organize kitchens, children’s rooms, family rooms, libraries, home offices, closets or any other space you require.
Imagine coming home and enjoying your calm, orderly new surroundings!
