Make it right - with a little help from Mike
By: Beverly Allen - January 30th, 2007
The king of Canadian contractors, Mike Holmes,
believes that homeowners must educate themselves before starting out on any home project. To help with the process, he’s released a new book, Make it Right: Inside Home Renovation with Canada’s Most Trusted Contractor, which is an A to Z primer for home renovation projects. The book includes advice on how to identify a good contractor, and direction on how to handle such issues as permits, deposits, contracts and material changes.
There are specific chapters on bathroom, kitchen and basement renovations with detailed sidebars with Holmes’ take on features such as bump-outs, in-house sprinklers and ventilation. Each of these chapters also provides a list of the top ten project-related issues Holmes’ thinks homeowners need to know about.
Also useful are the charts that explain the pros and cons—including the environmental concerns— associated with various building materials and which offer a yes/no answer to the question “recommended by Mike?”
There’s also a useful glossary of building terms and products. With a list price of $33, Holmes’ book is an excellent resource for anyone buying a new house or renovating their existing home. For more information, go the www.holmesonhomes.com.
